Week 9: Antebellum
Updated: Mar 29, 2022
Today, I would like to introduce a movie of a genre have not mentioned before, the Antebellum, 3rd place in the Korean box office this week. The genres of this movie are mystery, thriller, and horror. The film produced in the United States, the story follows a 21st century African-American woman. It released in the United States in 2020, was re-released in the Korea in 2022 this year, and the response in the Korea is not so good. This film was advertised that made by the production team of the films Get Out (2017) and Us (2019), but the audience is evaluating it just that's all. Although this film shows that African-American is implicitly victims including excessive Political Correctness, it is very ironic considering that Koreans are being racist by African-Americans in the United States. The message to teach the audience the displeasure of racism does not seem to be well received in East Asia.
Antebellum is written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz in their feature directorial debuts. The film stars Janelle Monáe, Eric Lange, Jena Malone, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, and Gabourey Sidibe.
As of February 22, 2022, the cumulative sales of Antebellum are 665,238,930 won and cumulative audience of the film are 70,161 at the Korea Movie Net premium data. The titles of Get Out (2017) and Us (2019) seem to have made the film No. 3 in the Korean box office this week. Just because the previous two films are famous not only in Korea but also worldwide and highly recognized. Considering the audience's comments that the production of this film was good but the message of it was unpleasant, so it is unlikely that additional profits will be available in the Korean movie market.
